Motorola Droid X2

Motorola is continuing to build upon their successful lineup of Android phones and specifically the Droid brand. Available exclusively through Verizon, the Droid phones have been very successful. This was largely in part to the high quality devices and exceptional advertising campaigns that were tied to them. Motorola is back this summer with the latest entry, the Droid X2.

The Droid X2 is the followup to the Droid X. Unlike the original Droid phones, these do not have a physical keyboard. Instead they offer what’s termed a soft keyboard. This allows the device to keep a very slim body and keeps it very lightweight. This particular Android phone is not light on performance, offering a dual 1Ghz processor. At the time of this review, this is the fastest processor available on any phone, on any platform. The added performance really allows for multitasking, faster opening of applications and an overall improved user experience.

The display is front and center on any smartphone. In the case of the Droid X2, it’s a stunning 4.3″ qHD display, which has been vastly upgraded from the original model. This improved display makes it a pleasure to use. Photos from the 8 megapixel camera are filled with colors and you can even shoot amazing 1080p video. While it’s easy to connect to a TV to view videos, it’s not necessary given the size of the display. The phone is outfitted with an HDMI output, so you can easily connect to any HDTV.

The powerhouse of a phone is running an equally powerful operating system with Android 2.2. At the time of this review, the Droid X2 has not been upgraded to Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). Motorola has confirmed that the phone would receive an update to the operating system at no additional charge. Motorola has their custom MotoBlur service installed. If you prefer a different launcher, this is easily accomplished by downloading one from the Android Market.

Battery life was impressive, despite the size of the display and processor. Power users might want to consider a spare battery or carry a car charger.

At the core, the Droid X2 is a phone and it is available exclusively through Verizon. The quality of calls were superb and we did not experience any dropped calls.

Overall, it’s hard to find fault the the Droid X2. It has all the specifications one would look for in a smartphone and at $199, it’s priced right. If you are in the market for an Android phone, I’d highly recommend you check out the Droid X2 on Verizon.
